RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages down to the facility... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of a great many UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
