European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
