The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
