A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential threats associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about classified matters in all cars.
Safety Advice for Defence Personnel
In a recent appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard commented on reports that MoD staff have been told not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Background
The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable China to switch off public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
The wider defence situation highlights the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of government operations, including transport usage to communication practices.
